Best Use of Iodine Supplement

Use of an iodine supplement along with supporting nutrients designed to achieve whole body iodine sufficiency has been used by Drs Guy Abraham, David Brownstein, and Jorge Flechas to supply optimal amounts of the essential nutrients to achieve the best possible mental and physical performance. This protocol stresses Magnesium, Vitamin C, Selenium, Zinc, Copper, Riboflavin and NoFlush Niacin (Niacin Hexanicotinate) for optimal iodine utilization. Physicians have found that using an iodine/potassium iodide supplement such as LugoTabs has resulted in achieving whole body iodine sufficiency.
It is interesting to note the there has never been a study done to establish the optimal amount of an iodine supplement needed to achieve whole body sufficiency. The USA’s RDA for iodine was set to solely prevent goiter growth, ignoring the need for iodine by other body systems. Iodization of salt in the USA gives a false sense of iodine sufficiency. This has resulted in the public relying on iodized salt for supplementation instead of the focusing on total body need for iodine.
Lugols solution 5%, first developed in 1829 by the French physician Jean Lugol, has been used extensively as a daily iodine supplement. The daily amount recommended was between 0.1ml and 0.3ml representing 12.5mg to 37.5mg of total iodine. This recommendation can be found in the 1995 edition of Remington’s Science and Practice of Pharmacy. It is interesting to note that the 12.5mg daily recommendation is very close to the estimated 13.8mg daily iodine intake of the Japanese population living in Japan. Because of the problems associated Lugol’s solution such as bad taste, staining of clothing and accurate measurement LugoTab was specially formulated to deliver the traditional Lugol’s solution in tablet form. It is important to deliver both iodine and iodide as different organs of the body prefer one type over the other.
Iodine testing can be done to determine the bodies current status, basically, the tests evaluate either spot iodine to see if there is enough iodine in the diet to prevent goiter or the 24 hour urine collection after a 50mg Iodine load which evaluates whole body iodine status.
